How to check your local ranking on Google Maps

The quick way most owners check is to search their own keyword on their phone. That shows one answer, from one spot, for one person. Google ranks local results by the searcher's location, so the answer changes as soon as the customer is a few blocks away. A fair check asks the same question from several places at once.

  1. Pick the keyword a customer would type, like "plumber near me" or "family dentist", not your business name.
  2. Enter the business name and the city you serve. For a service-area business, use the main city you cover.
  3. Add your email so the report link reaches you, then run the check. It searches from the business's own location and two more points nearby, and returns your rank at each in about 30 seconds.
  4. Try a second keyword the same day if you have checks left. Each person gets 3 a day.

Why you rank differently across town

Google says local results are based on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Prominence is how well known the business is, which includes its review count and rating. Distance is how far the searcher is from you, and it is the one that changes with every search.

So the same profile can hold the top spot at the corner by your front door and drop out of the results a couple of miles away, where another business is closer to the person searching. That is normal. What you can change is relevance and prominence: the profile's categories and details, and a steady flow of recent reviews. Those widen the area where you hold the Map Pack.

How to read the grid

  • Each point is one search, run from that spot on the map. The number is your position in the Google Maps results there.
  • In your result, green means you are in the top 3, the Map Pack most people look at first. Amber means you appear, but below the top 3. Red means you did not appear in the results the check looked at.
  • The point in the middle is your own block. Tap any other point to see which businesses hold it.
  • The overall position is where Google placed you in one search covering the whole area.
  • The table lists the top 5 businesses for someone searching from your own point, so you can see who you are up against.

Look for the pattern, not one number. Green close to the business and red further out is the usual shape. Red right next to the business usually points at the profile itself: the wrong primary category, missing details, or too few recent reviews.

One-off check or ongoing tracking?

A one-off check answers one question: where do I stand today for this keyword? That is enough when you are sizing up a new market, looking at a prospect before a sales call, or deciding whether a profile fix is worth doing.

It stops being enough once you are changing things and need to know whether they worked. Then you want the same grid for every keyword that matters, re-run after each change, with every run kept so this month can sit next to last month. That is what a local rank tracker does. Reputant's runs 3x3 or 5x5 grids for up to seven keywords per location, shows the competitor holding each point, and keeps the history.

How it stays free

Each check runs real Google searches around your business, and those searches cost money. To keep the tool free for everyone, each person gets 3 checks a day. Your report link keeps working after that - and if the day's budget runs out, you can still leave your details and we will run the grid for you by hand.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my local ranking on Google?

Enter your business name, the keyword a customer would type and your city in the checker above. It runs that search from your business's own location and two more points nearby and shows your Google Maps position at each, plus your overall position across the area, in about 30 seconds. The full 9-point grid around you is in the Reputant app. Searching from your own phone only tells you what Google shows at your location, signed in as you.

Why is my Google Maps ranking different on my phone?

Because Google ranks local results from where the searcher is standing. Your phone reports your location, so it shows the ranking for the spot you are in, often your own business, where you tend to rank best. Search history and signed-in results can shift it further. A grid checks from several points instead of one.

Is this rank checker really free?

Yes. There is no charge and no account. You enter an email so the report link reaches you, and each person gets 3 checks a day because every check runs real Google searches that cost money. If the day's budget runs out, leave your details and we will run the grid for you by hand.

What do I get back?

Your rank at your own location and at two more points nearby, your overall position across the area, and the top 5 businesses at your location, in about half a minute. The other 6 points on the grid are shown locked; Reputant checks every one.

Which keyword should I use?

The search a customer types, not your business name. "plumber near me", "family dentist", "personal injury lawyer" are the right shape. One keyword per check.

Does this work for service-area businesses?

Yes. Tell us the city you serve and we center the grid there instead of on a storefront address.

What happens with my email?

We use it to send the result and to follow up once about tracking the keyword over time. No list, no newsletter.

How do I track this every month?

Reputant's local rank tracker runs the same grid on demand for every keyword and location, keeps every run, and shows how the map changes as reviews and profile updates land.

Reviews and rankings, measured without the manual work

Reputant runs this same grid on demand for every keyword you care about, and automates the reviews that move it.
