AI visibility for local businesses: what it is and how to measure it

The short answer

AI visibility is whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini name your business when someone asks for one like it. To measure it, ask each assistant the questions your customers ask, in your city, several times, and record whether you were named, where, and who was named instead.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often, and how well, AI assistants name your business when someone asks them for one like it. If a customer asks ChatGPT for a plumber in Austin and your company is on the list, you have AI visibility for that question. If it names three competitors and not you, you do not.

Think of it as the AI version of ranking on Google Maps. The difference is that there is no fixed results page. Each answer is written fresh, so you measure how often you show up, not one fixed position.

You will also see it called AI search visibility or LLM visibility. LLM stands for large language model, the technology behind these assistants. All of these terms point at the same question: does the assistant know you and will it suggest you?

Why should a local business care?

Because customers have started asking. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found that 45% of consumers used an AI tool such as ChatGPT to find a local business recommendation in the past year, up from 6% the year before.

Trust is following. The same research found that 42% of consumers already trust AI recommendations as much as they trust online reviews.

You cannot see any of this in your Google stats. A customer who asks an assistant and gets a competitor's name never shows up as a lost visit. Measuring is the only way to know.

What counts as being visible?

Not all appearances are equal. Four things are worth separating.

  • Named or not named. The simplest test.
  • Position. The first name in a list gets more attention than the fifth.
  • Recommended or only mentioned. "Try Smith Plumbing, known for fast emergency work" is a recommendation. "Other options include Smith Plumbing" is a mention.
  • Accurate or wrong. An assistant that names you with the wrong hours or an old address is not helping you.

How do I measure AI visibility by hand?

You can do this today with a spreadsheet and about an hour. It is the best way to see what customers see before you pay for anything.

  1. Write down five or six questions a customer would ask. Use your real city and the way people talk: "best roofer in Calgary", "emergency dentist near me", "who fixes a leaking tap in Halifax".
  2. Open a fresh chat in ChatGPT, then Claude, then Gemini. Use a clean chat each time so earlier answers do not tilt the next one.
  3. Ask each question and copy the full answer into your sheet.
  4. Ask the same question two more times. Answers vary, so three runs show whether a result is steady or a fluke.
  5. Fill in one row per prompt, per assistant, using the columns below.
  6. Repeat in four to six weeks, after you have changed something, and compare.

What should I record for each prompt?

Keep the same columns every time, so a change next month is easy to see.

Our guide on how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT has copy-and-paste prompts to start with.

How do I read the results?

Look for patterns before individual answers. If you appear for the specific job ("water heater repair") but not for the broad one ("plumber in Austin"), your website and profile may spell out the job well but not the general category.

If one assistant names you and the others do not, the difference often comes from how each one finds its information. Our page on how ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity pick local businesses covers what is known about that.

If the same two competitors appear every time, look at their profiles and reviews. They are usually ahead on something you can see: more recent reviews, a fuller profile or a clearer website.

What does a tracker add over doing it by hand?

Mainly time and consistency. A tool runs the same prompts the same way, across all three assistants, and keeps the history, so month-to-month changes are not lost in a messy sheet.

Reputant asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini up to six prompts per check, with each assistant's web search on. For each answer it shows whether you were named, your place in the list, whether you were recommended or only mentioned, and who was named instead. A separate question asks what each assistant knows about your business by name.

It does not track Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. You can still test those two by hand with the same prompts.

How do I improve my AI visibility?

Work on the public information assistants read about you: a complete Google Business Profile, steady recent reviews with replies, a website that names your services and town, and the same name, address and phone number on every listing.

Nobody controls what an assistant says, so none of this is guaranteed. The point of measuring is to see whether your changes moved anything.

Frequently asked questions

They overlap but are not the same. SEO is about ranking in search engines. AI visibility is about being named in an assistant's written answer. The same groundwork, a good profile, reviews and a clear website, helps both.
Every four to six weeks is plenty for most small businesses. Check again after a real change, such as a new batch of reviews or a rewritten website.
Assistants write each answer fresh, so the list and order can differ. That is why you run each prompt a few times and look at how often you appear.
At least ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, since customers use all of them. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are worth a hand test too, though Reputant does not track them.
Reputant does not give a single score. It shows each prompt and each assistant separately, because one number hides which question you win and which you lose.
