How to choose Google Business Profile categories

The short answer

Your primary category is the one label on your Google Business Profile that best describes what your business is. Pick the most specific option from Google's list, such as "Nail salon" rather than "Salon". Add extras only for real secondary services. In the 2026 Whitespark survey of local search experts, the primary category ranked first among map pack factors.

What is a Google Business Profile category?

A category is a label you pick from a list Google provides. It tells Google what kind of business you are. Per Google's help page on categories, the categories you select affect your local ranking, and they also decide which search terms can bring up your business.

You choose one primary category and, if you need them, some additional ones. Google says you cannot create your own. If the specific category you want is not listed, Google says to choose a general one.

Google describes relevance on its page about improving your local ranking as how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for.

Why does the primary category matter so much?

Google does not publish a weight for each factor, so the best public evidence is opinion. In the 2026 Whitespark survey of local search experts, the primary Business Profile category ranked first among map pack and Maps factors. Proximity of your address to the point of search ranked second. Additional categories ranked eighth.

That is the opinion of the people surveyed, not a statement from Google about how its ranking works. You cannot move your building, but you can change your category in a few minutes.

Google's own example of a specific choice is to pick "Nail salon" instead of "Salon". When you choose, go for the label that names exactly what you do.

How do I choose my primary category?

Google says to pick the most specific option available. Its own example is "Nail salon" rather than "Salon" (Google). Follow these steps.

  1. Write down the one thing customers pay you for most often. That is your core business.
  2. Search the category list for that word. Try the plural, the singular and the trade name, because the list uses fixed wording.
  3. Pick the most specific match. If "Emergency plumber" and "Plumber" both appear, ask which one describes most of your work, not your busiest weekend.
  4. Save the change, then check the result in a few weeks with a rank check for your main keyword.

Google: choose a business category

How many additional categories should I add?

Fewer than you think. Google's Business Profile guidelines say to choose the fewest number of categories it takes to describe your overall core business, and the category help page says not to select a category for every product or service.

Add one when a real, separate part of your work needs its own label. A bakery that also runs a coffee counter might add a coffee shop category. A bakery that sometimes sells cards should not add a card shop.

The guidelines also say not to use categories that pertain to other businesses that are nearby or related. If you need both categories for the same location, they say to create two profiles instead.

Plumber who also does drainsPlumberDrainage serviceContractor, Handyman, HVAC contractor
Neighborhood bakery with a coffee barBakeryCoffee shopRestaurant, Grocery store

These are invented examples. Check the live category list when you edit.

Do service-area businesses choose categories differently?

The rule is the same: pick the category that describes what you are. What differs is the address. Google's guidelines say a service-area business should have one profile for its central office or location with a designated service area, and that the service area should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where the business is based.

The Whitespark survey lists showing your address when you are a service-area business, and service areas larger than 2 hours of driving, as negative and suspension-risk factors (Whitespark, 2026). The right category will not rescue a profile that breaks those rules.

How do I change my category?

The steps below come from Google's category help page. Menu names may differ from what you see.

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile.
  2. Open your profile and select Edit profile.
  3. Select Edit next to Business category.
  4. Type and select your primary category. Use Add another category for any extras.
  5. Select Save.

Google says that if you add or edit a category, you might be asked to verify your business again. Change one thing at a time so you know what caused any shift.

What category mistakes cost rank?

Avoid these. All of them are within your control.

  • Choosing a broad label, such as "Contractor", because it feels safe. Google says to choose the most specific option available.
  • Adding a category for every service. Google says not to select a category for every product or service.
  • Switching the primary category back and forth every month. You cannot tell what helped, and Google may ask you to verify again.
  • Putting keywords in the business name to make up for a vague category. The guidelines say unnecessary information in the name is not permitted and could result in suspension.
  • Never rechecking. If you changed what you sell, your category should change too.

Can I get a worksheet to fill in?

Copy this, fill it in, and keep it with your profile notes.

Category worksheet

My core business (one phrase): ____ My main customer search: ____ Primary category I chose: ____ Why it is the most specific match: ____ Extras I will add (a real secondary service only): ____ Date changed: ____ Rank check before: ____ Rank check 4 weeks after: ____

How do I know my category change worked?

Check your position before the change and again a few weeks later, for the same keyword. The tool below tests three points around your business and needs no account.

One check is a hint, not proof. Keep the keyword the same and compare like with like.

What should I fix after the category?

A category is one part of your profile. Google's ranking page names relevance, distance and prominence, and says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking.

Our guide on how to rank higher on Google Maps covers the other levers. The Google Business Profile optimization checklist lists every field to check, and why your ranking dropped helps if the change made things worse.
