What ChatGPT says about your business, and how to fix wrong info

The short answer

Ask ChatGPT the same questions about your business a few times and note each error. Then fix the places that hold your details: your Google Business Profile, your website and your listings. Make sure your site does not block OpenAI's search crawler. Then ask again and compare with your notes.

Can I make ChatGPT correct what it says about my business?

This guide covers what you can do yourself: check what the assistants say, then correct the public pages that hold your business details. It does not cover any way to rewrite an answer directly. Be wary of any company that promises to.

Fixing your own pages is slow and not guaranteed to change an answer.

How do I find out what ChatGPT says about me?

Ask it, then ask again. Use the same wording each time and record what comes back.

  1. Ask: "What do you know about [business name] in [town]?"
  2. Ask: "What are the hours and phone number for [business name] in [town]?"
  3. Ask: "What services does [business name] offer?"
  4. Ask: "What do customers say about [business name]?"
  5. Repeat each question two more times, in a new chat each time.
  6. Do the same in Claude and Gemini.

Can a tool do this check for me?

Reputant's AI visibility tracker has a separate question for this. It asks each of the three assistants what it knows about your business by name, then reports whether the assistant recognizes you, the tone of what it says, and any claims it gets wrong. It also shows whether you are named when someone asks for a business like yours. See also the guide to AI visibility.

It covers ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and not Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. It reports what the assistants say. It cannot change it.

How do I fix the pages it may read?

Work through these in order. Each one is a place that holds your business details.

  1. Fix your Google Business Profile first. Check the name, address, hours, phone number and categories against Google's guidelines.
  2. Fix your website. State your services, your town, your hours and your phone number in plain sentences on the pages a visitor would open.
  3. Fix your listings. Search your business name and phone number, and correct each directory with an old or different detail. See the local SEO audit for how.
  4. Check that your site is not blocking ChatGPT search. OpenAI says sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so ask whoever runs your website to confirm your robots.txt file does not block it.
  5. Add what is missing. If a fact is wrong because it is not written anywhere, publish it: an about page, a services page, a clear contact page.

How long until ChatGPT shows the correct information?

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust for search results. That covers only that one setting. OpenAI publishes no time frame for other fixes.

Re-check once a month with the same questions and the same error log, and look at the trend, not a single answer.

What if the information is harmful or false about a person?

If an answer makes a false and damaging claim, save a screenshot with the date and the exact question, and fix whatever page it may come from. For a serious claim, such as an accusation of wrongdoing, get advice from a lawyer. This is general information and not legal advice.

What should I put on my website so the facts are clear?

A short facts block on your about or contact page puts your details in one place. Keep it plain and keep it identical to your Google profile. Update it whenever anything changes, and tell the people who run your listings. Write full sentences rather than a sign-off line.

Facts block for your about page

[Business name] is a [type of business] in [town, state or province]. We offer [service one], [service two] and [service three]. We are open [days and hours]. You can reach us at [phone number] or visit us at [full address]. We have served [town and nearby areas] since [year].

What should I avoid?

Do not pay anyone who says they can edit AI answers. Do not post fake reviews or pages to push the answer your way. And do not rely on one answer as proof either way.

The larger picture is in the guide to how AI chooses local businesses, and the steps for being recommended at all are in how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.

No. Reputant checks what ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini say about your business and flags claims they get wrong. Fixing your pages is up to you.
Once a month is a reasonable rhythm for a small business, and again after you change your profile, website or contact details.
