How to show up in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode locally

The short answer

Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet. For local results, Google names relevance, distance and prominence, so keep your Business Profile complete, collect reviews and keep your website clear.

What does Google say you need to do?

Google's documentation on AI features in Search covers AI Overviews and AI Mode together. It says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements.

It also says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. You do not need to create new machine readable files, AI text files or markup, and there is no special schema.org structured data to add. It adds that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for these features.

What does that mean for a local business?

Google's page on how local results are ranked says it comes down to relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Distance is how far each business is from the person searching. Prominence is how well known a business is, and Google says it relies on signals such as how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have.

Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.

What can I do?

None of this is a guarantee. All of it is within your control.

  1. Make the profile complete and accurate. Follow Google's guidelines for representing your business: the real-world name, categories that are as specific as possible, regular customer-facing hours and a website that represents your location.
  2. Keep it current. Google's AI documentation lists checking that your Business Profile information is up to date among its SEO best practices.
  3. Collect reviews steadily and reply to them. Start with how to get more Google reviews.
  4. Make your website say what you do and where, in plain sentences about each service and the area you serve.
  5. Check that your pages can be indexed and shown with a snippet. A page set to noindex or nosnippet by mistake would not meet the requirement above.
  6. Keep your name, address and phone number the same on every listing.

Could I be blocking myself without knowing?

Possibly. Google names the controls that limit what it shows from your pages: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. Ask whoever built your website to check whether any of them are set on the pages you want shown.

How do I check what Google shows for my business?

Search your real customer questions in Google, with AI Mode if you have it, a few times and from a few places, and write down who is named. That takes ten minutes.

Hand test for AI Overviews and AI Mode

Search 1: [your service] near me Search 2: best [your service] in [your town] Search 3: [your service] open [day] in [your town] For each: was I named? Who was? What did it say about them? Date and place searched:

What does Reputant track, and what does it not?

Reputant's AI visibility check asks ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the questions your customers ask and records whether you were named, where, and who was named instead. It does not track Google AI Overviews or AI Mode, and it does not track Perplexity. Test those by hand with the steps above.

For the details on the assistants it does cover, see how AI chooses local businesses and the guide to AI visibility.

Where do I start?

Start with the groundwork. The guide on how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT covers the same basics and what to check afterward. Check again every month or two and compare.
