LocalBusiness schema: a copy-paste guide
The short answer
LocalBusiness schema is a block of code on your website that states your business name, address, phone number and hours in a format search engines read. Google requires only the name and address, recommends more, and says it does not guarantee that features using structured data will appear in search results.

What is LocalBusiness schema?
Structured data is extra code on a web page that labels its facts, such as a phone number, so a program does not have to guess. Schema.org is the shared vocabulary for those labels, and JSON-LD is one way of writing them. Google's page on the topic uses JSON-LD.
On schema.org, LocalBusiness is described as "a particular physical business or branch of an organization". It sits under both Organization and Place.
So the markup describes one physical location. A business with three branches would describe each branch on its own page.
What does Google say about LocalBusiness structured data?
Google documents LocalBusiness markup on its LocalBusiness structured data page. It tells site owners to use the most specific LocalBusiness subtype possible. Its examples include Restaurant, DaySpa and HealthClub.
It also says Google does not guarantee that features that consume structured data will show up in search results. Adding the markup makes you eligible at most. Treat it as tidy housekeeping and expect no particular outcome.
| Property | Google lists it as | What it holds |
|---|---|---|
| name | Required | The name of the business |
| address | Required | A PostalAddress with as many fields as possible |
| telephone | Recommended | The primary contact number, with country and area codes |
| url | Recommended | The full URL of the specific location, which must work |
| geo | Recommended | Latitude and longitude, each with at least five decimal places |
| openingHoursSpecification | Recommended | Days with opens and closes times, plus optional seasonal dates |
| priceRange | Recommended | A numeric range or currency signs, under 100 characters or Google will not show it |
Google also lists menu, servesCuisine and department. Reviews and ratings are meant only for sites that collect reviews about other local businesses, so a business should not mark up its own.
What does a LocalBusiness JSON-LD sample look like?
The example below is for a made-up day spa. It uses only properties from the table above. Replace each value with your own, and pick the most specific type for your trade from the schema.org list rather than keeping DaySpa.
It goes inside the page for that location, usually in the head. Keep every value identical to what the page shows. Google's page on AI features asks for structured data that matches the visible text.
Example JSON-LD (made-up business, replace every value)
<script type="application/ld+json"> { "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "DaySpa", "name": "Example Day Spa", "url": "https://www.example.com/", "telephone": "+1-555-0100", "priceRange": "$", "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "streetAddress": "100 Example Street", "addressLocality": "Exampleville", "addressRegion": "CA", "postalCode": "90000", "addressCountry": "US" }, "geo": { "@type": "GeoCoordinates", "latitude": 34.05223, "longitude": -118.24368 }, "openingHoursSpecification": [ { "@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification", "dayOfWeek": ["Monday", "Tuesday", "Wednesday", "Thursday", "Friday"], "opens": "09:00", "closes": "18:00" }, { "@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification", "dayOfWeek": "Saturday", "opens": "10:00", "closes": "16:00" } ] } </script>
How do I check that my markup works?
These steps follow Google's LocalBusiness page.
- Add the markup to the page for that location.
- Run the code through the Rich Results Test and fix any critical errors it lists.
- Put the pages live, then use the URL Inspection tool to see how Google sees a page.
- Confirm the pages are not blocked by robots.txt, a noindex tag or a login.
- Submit a sitemap so Google learns about changes. Google says it may take several days to find and crawl a new page.
Does LocalBusiness schema make AI assistants recommend me?
We found no page from Google, OpenAI or Anthropic saying so, so this guide does not claim it. Google's page on AI features says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Our suggestion is to add the markup because it states your details clearly, then test the result instead of assuming it. Ask ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini the question a customer would ask, note whether you appear, and repeat after your change.
The wider routine is in our guide on how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT. For the thinking behind it, see how AI chooses local businesses and what AI Overviews mean for local. Listings elsewhere matter too, so read Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
