How to get more Facebook reviews

The short answer

To get Facebook reviews, turn on Recommendations in your Page settings, then ask customers to open your Page, tap Reviews and say Yes or No to recommending you. Facebook shows a rating only after enough public reviews come in. Reputant reads and replies to them but does not send requests for Facebook.

How do Facebook recommendations work?

Facebook calls a review a Recommendation. Meta's help pages say a person recommends a business by going to its Page, clicking Reviews, clicking Yes to recommend or No to not recommend, choosing who can see the review, writing it and clicking Post.

A Page's rating is based on the reviews and recommendations people share about it. Meta says only Pages that turn on recommendations may show a rating, and a Page may not have a rating if it has not received at least 5 reviews. Only recommendations shared publicly count toward the overall rating. A reviewer who picks Friends as the audience is seen only by friends.

Meta also says it does not verify that a reviewer bought the product or used the service, and that a person should not leave a recommendation for a business if they help manage its Page.

How do I turn on Facebook reviews for my Page?

Meta's help page says turning Recommendations and reviews on lets anyone logged into Facebook publish a Recommendation on your Page and see its rating. To see your Page's Recommendations, go to the Reviews tab below your cover photo. You may need to select More first.

Follow these steps, as Meta describes them for a computer.

  1. Log into Facebook, then click your profile photo in the top right.
  2. Click See all profiles, then select the Page you want to switch into.
  3. Click your Page's profile photo in the top right, then Settings & privacy, then Settings.
  4. Click Page and tagging.
  5. Toggle "Allow others to view and leave reviews on your Page?" on.

Meta says turning Recommendations off disables them and removes the rating and reviews from your Page. If your Page had reviews before, Meta says Recommendations were turned on automatically. Menu names can change, so Meta's help page is the place to check.

How do I ask customers for a Facebook review?

Facebook has no step in Meta's help pages that creates a ready-made review link for a Page, so we do not describe one. What Meta does describe is the route a customer takes: your Page, then Reviews, then Yes or No. Our suggestion is to tell them exactly that.

Ask every customer the same way, for the reasons in our guide on review gating. Do not offer a reward for a review. In the US, the FTC rule on consumer reviews (16 CFR Part 465) makes it unlawful to give compensation or other incentives in exchange for, or conditioned on, reviews expressing a particular sentiment. Other places have their own rules. This is general information and not legal advice.

Ask for honest experiences. Meta's page tells reviewers to base a recommendation on personal experience and to focus on the product or service, so wording that asks for "your experience" fits that.

Example text for a customer who uses Facebook

Hi {name}, thanks for visiting {business}. If you use Facebook, you can share your experience on our Page: open {business} on Facebook, tap Reviews, and choose Yes or No.

Example for your counter or receipt

Tell others about your visit. Find {business} on Facebook and tap Reviews.

Can Reputant send Facebook review requests?

No. Reputant's requests ask for a Google review, and there is no request for Facebook. What Reputant does for Facebook is read your Page's recommendations into the same feed as your Google reviews, and post replies to them. The reply is written by you, and nothing posts without you.

Reputant's reply suggestions appear only when you ask for one. For the reply routine, see responding to negative reviews and responding to positive reviews.

Facebook is one place customers leave reviews. The wider routine for Google is in our guide on how to get more Google reviews.

What if a Facebook review breaks the rules?

Meta says you can report a Recommendation or review if it does not follow its Community Standards, and that it removes spam reviews to keep ratings trustworthy. Reputant cannot report or remove a review for you, so do that in Facebook.
